Password Box is Greyed Out
  • Operating System: Windows95
  • Application: Dial Up Networking

Please note: This fix requires your Win95 CD.

If Windows 95 doesn't think you're in a multi-user environment it will not allow you to save your password in Dial Up Networking's "Connect To" box. There is a work around for this, however, which will allow the Save Password check box to become "ungreyed."

  1. Choose Passwords from the Control Panel.
  2. Click on the User Profiles tab.
  3. Select Users can customize their preferences and desktop.
  4. Hit OK and restart your computer.
  5. Windows 95 will prompt for user name and password information before it "logs" you into Windows.
    1. For User name enter something like your name. It doesn't really matter what you enter here. But, you must put something in.
    2. Leave the password field blank. NOTE: This is important since you don't want to forget some password you may have entered here.
  6. Click OK.

NOTE: If you don't click OK, but rather click cancel, you won't be able to save the password in the DUN icon.

  7. Double-click on the Limo.Net icon in your Dial-Up Networking folder, type in the password and check save password in the Connect To window.

Note: Each time you boot up with Windows 95 you will now get a "logging into Windows" window asking for user name and password. Remember to click OK. Obviously, you won't need a password in that screen if you didn't enter one when setting up the User Profiles.

If the Save Password box is still not available, go into the Network control panel and make sure that "Client For Microsoft Networks" is one of the installed components. If it is not, here's how you add it in:

  1. Go to the Network control panel
  2. Click on the Add button
  3. Select Client from the list and click on Add
  4. Under Manufacturers, highlight Microsoft. Under Network Clients, select Client for Microsoft Networks. Do not select Client for Netware Networks.
  5. Click OK and restart your computer

This still may not take care of it - if these suggestions still don't enable the "save password" option, you'll probably need to contact Microsoft. They have a lot of information available at http://www.microsoft.com/support/.
